Belize

How do you define a country like Belize?  It's a place that defies definition, and even understanding.  But really, it's not meant to be understood, just experienced.  I spent a lovely three months there this year and just loved it.  It's kind of crazy and dysfunctional and it doesn't seem to know how to run itself as a country but it's citizens seem happy and prosperous despite that.

¿Cómo definir un país como Belice?  Es un lugar que se resiste a la definición, y hasta a la comprensión.  Pero, en realidad no es necesario entenderlo, solo sentirlo.  Pasé unos tres meses maravillosos ahí este año y me encantó.  Está medio loco y disfuncional y no parece saber como operar como país pero sus ciudadanos parecen felices y prósperos a pesar de eso.    

Even though the country is very small it tends to take many hours to travel even short distances because public transportation consists of retired american school buses and a lot of the roads are in pretty bad shape.  Most of the country is empty; with a population of about 300,000 the country is only one third as populated as it was during the height of the Mayan civilization.  The government doesn't seem to do much upkeep on streets, many which were once paved have reverted back into dust.  It seems like after Belize became its own country in 1981 and stopped being a British territory it didn't quite know what to do with itself and so it retains many vestiges of British rule.  For example, all the currency has Queen Elizabeth II on the front.

Aunque el país es muy pequeño puede tomar varias horas viajar hasta distancias cortas porque el transporte público consiste de autobuses de escuela americanos que ya han sido retirados y muchas de las carreteras están en mal estado.  La mayor parte del país está vacía; con una población de unos 300,000 tiene menos de un tercio de la población que tenía durante el apogeo de la civilización Maya.  El gobierno no hace mucho mantenimiento de las calles, muchas de las cuales habiendo sido pavimentadas en un tiempo se han vuelto polvo.  Parece que después de que Belice se convirtió en su propio país en 1981 no supo muy bien que hacer con sí mismo y por eso retiene muchos vestigios de el dominio inglés.  Por ejemplo, todo el dinero tiene la Reina Elizabeth II en frente.

                  

The western part of the country where I stayed is on the border with Guatemala.  It's green and tropical and very beautiful.  We had a large Mayan site within walking distance of town called Xunantunich.  It's still one of the tallest buildings in Belize.  You have the cross the green Mopan river on a ferry (there's no bridge) and the area has many iguanas and howler monkeys.

La parte oeste del país donde me quedé está en la frontera con Guatemala.  Es verde y tropical y muy bella.  Había un gran sitio arqueológico muy cerca del pueblo llamado Xunantunich.  Todavía es uno de los edificios más altos de Belice.  Tienes que cruzar el verde río Mopan en un ferry (no hay puente) y el área tiene muchas iguanas y monos aulladores.

The landscapes are gorgeous, the people are kind, the rhythm of life is the most laid back I've ever seen.      

I loved all the food I tasted.  The iconic Belizean dish is "riceandbeans" (all one word, lol).  It's white rice cooked in coconut milk and bean broth with the cooked beans.  Delicious.  The local brothers treated us with so much love, so much gratitude and so much generosity that we felt thoroughly spoiled.  Here are a few shots of our experiences.

Los paisajes son hermosos, la gente es noble, y el ritmo de vida es uno de los más relajados que jamás haya visto.  Me encantó toda la comida que probé.  El platillo típico beliceño es "riceandbeans" (pronunciado como una sola palabra, ja ja).  Es arroz blanco cocido en leche de coco y en caldo de frijol con los frijoles ya cocidos.  Delicioso.  Los hermanos locales nos trataron con tanto amor, gratitud,  y generosidad que nos sintimos completamente consentidas.  Aquí hay algunas fotos de nuestras experiencias.
