El Discursante

So in this picture this brother, who served one month in Pinal as a pioneer and ministerial servant, is giving the public talk.  He had been in Pinal for about one week when he was asked to do this.  How much time in advance was he given to prepare?  3 minutes.
I know this because I was doing sound at the time and 2 minutes before the meeting was to start I was told that the first song was going to change.
And amazingly he did have a prepared outline in his meeting bag and he did give a very excellent talk with lots of energy and good examples and secular information and statistics.  So kudos to brothers like this for their preparation and good disposition.

Así que en esta foto este hermano, quién sirvió un mes en Pinal como precursor y siervo ministerial, está dando el discurso público.  Tenía en Pinal como una semana cuando se le pidió que hiciera esto.  ¿Cuánto tiempo de antelación se le dió para prepararse?  3 minutos.
Yo sé esto porque estaba haciendo el sonido en ese tiempo y 2 minutos antes de que comenzara la reunión se me dijo que la canción iba a cambiar.
E increíblemente sí tenía un bosquejo preparado en su maletín de reunión y sí dió un discurso excelente con mucha energía y con buenos ejemplos e información y estadísticas seglares.  Así que felicito a hermanos así por su preparación y su buena disposición.

Just another Friday

This is what happened the day after our visitors left.  Sorry you missed it!
Esto es lo que pasó el día después de que la visita se fue.  ¡Siento que se lo hayan perdido!

Visitors

I love having visitors!  I like to parade them through the streets and introduce them to all my studies, lol.  So if you'd like to come visit us in Pinal and experience what service is like there we would love to have you.
My cousin Jasmin, Nataly, and the Bells came to visit in May and despite the rain we had a blast!

Me encanta tener visita!  Me gusta desfilarlos por las calles e introducirlos a todos mis estudiantes, ja ja. Así que si le gustaría visitarnos en Pinal y experimentar cómo es el servicio nos encantaría tenerlos.
Mi prima Jasmin, Nataly, y los Bell vinieron a visitarnos en Mayo y a pesar de la lluvia ¡nos divertimos un montón!

The first day was for touring Pinal and shopping.  On Sunday we went to Rio Escanela so Lawrence could give the talk.  The family that picked us up fed us twice that day and they took us to the river too even though it was cold and rainy!
El primer día fue para ver Pinal e ir de compras.  El domingo fuimos a Río Escanela para que Lawrence diera el discurso.  La familia que nos recogió nos dió de comer dos veces y nos llevó al río también ¡a pesar de que estaba frío y lluvioso!

This family is so generous too.  They are also serving here.  They're from Mexico City but they left their home and jobs and comforts to be here and now they live in this little house but they are so warm and loving and fun.  Their kids love it too, especially Abdiel, the little boy who strips off his clothes and jumps into any water he sees whenever the mood strikes him (which is always).  Oh, and handmade tortillas made from fresh corn and cooked over a wood fire? Ah-mazing!

Esta familia es tan generosa.  Están sirviendo aquí también.  Son de la Ciudad de México pero dejaron su casa y sus trabajos y comodidades para estar aquí y ahora viven en esta casita pero son tan cálidos y amorosos y divertidos.  A sus hijos les encanta también, especialmente a Abdiel, el niño que se arranca la ropa y se mete en cualquier agua que ve cuando quiera que se le antoja (lo cual es siempre).  O, ¿y las tortillas echas a mano de maíz fresco cocidas sobre la leña?  ¡Increíbles!

Oh, and if you do come to visit just know that's it's practically guaranteed that you will either have to do a public talk or have some sort of participation in the meeting.  And sometimes you will have no prior warning so yeah...just be really prepared.

O, y si sí vienes a visitar solo debes saber que está practicamente garantizado que o tendrás que dar el discurso público o tendrás algún otro tipo de participación en la reunión.  Y a veces no tendrás ningún previo aviso así que...solo prepárate muy bien.

Los frutos del territorio

I found the article about the pioneers who went to serve in Mexico in the Study Edition of the Watchtower of April 2013, pg. 3, very interesting.  One of the couples there had to eat beans and rice for several weeks and when they got tired of that their students gave them various kinds of fruits.
Even though Pinal is cold some fruits do grow there.  Right now is apple season and in the territory there grows all kinds of limes and lemons, oranges, and mandarins, mangos, bananas, papayas, figs, guayabas, maracuyas, pomegranates, peaches, zapotes, cranberries, etc.
We go crazy watching each type of fruit grow and waiting for its season to arrive.  We would eat the mangos we found on the ground even if they were green.  They're super good that way.  Their taste and texture is similar to that of a green apple (we discovered that one day when we ran out of water in a very isolated territory and we wanted to avoid dehydration).
Finally, when the mangos ripened people would give them to us by the bagful.  And they were the sweetest, creamiest mangos I have ever tasted.
I was sitting in the back of the truck happily peeling and eating away and I was on my third one (that's what I get for eating so much) when I finally looked down and noticed what looked like a little white seed and I thought: "Oh, a little seed.  Wait...mangos don't have seeds!" :O
Then it started to move...it was a worm!
I flung it out immediately completely horrified (how many might I have eaten?) and of course the other girls had a lot of fun at the expense of my new trauma.
But it didn't last long.  They were too good to waste.  But I did learn to avoid the mangos with little holes on the outside.

Se me hizo muy interesante el artículo sobre los precursores que fueron a servir en México de la Atalaya de Estudio de Abril 2013, pg. 3.  Una de las parejas ahí habla de que tuvieron que comer frijoles y arroz por varias semanas y cuando se cansaron de eso los estudiantes le regalaron una variedad de frutas.  
Aunque Pinal es frío si crecen ahí algunas frutas.  Ahorita es al epoca de manzanas y en el territorio de crecen limones y naranjas y mandarinas de todo tipo, mangos, platanos, papayas, higos, guayabas, maracuyas, granadas, duraznos, zapotes, arándanos, etc.  
Nos volvíamos locos mirando como crecía cada fruta y esperando que llegara su estación.  Nos comíamos los mangos que encontrábamos en el suelo aunque fueran verdes.  Saben súper ricos así.  Tienen el sabor y textura similar a una manzana verde (eso lo descubrimos una vez que nos quedamos sin agua en un territorio muy aislado y queríamos evitar la deshidratación).
Finalmente cuando maduraron los mangos nos los regalaban a bolsas llenas.  Y eran los mangos más dulces y cremosos que jamás había probado.  
Iba atrás de la camioneta pelando y comiendo felizmente y cuando iba en el tercero (eso me pasa por comelona) finalmente mire hacia abajo y note lo que parecía una pepita blanca y pensé: "Oh, una semillita.  Espera...¡los mangos no tienen semillas!" :O
Entonces se comienza a mover....¡era un gusano!
Inmediatamente la lancé para afuera completamente horrorizada (¿cuantos me habré comido?) y claro a todas las muchachas se les hizo muy divertido mi nuevo trauma.
Pero no duró mucho.  Estaban demasiado buenos para desperdiciarlos.  Pero sí aprendí a evitar los mangos que tengan hoyitos por fuera.

Sound

So, one of the perks of serving in a small group with few brothers is that you get to try out privileges that you normally would never be able to have in a large congregation.
For example, I did sound in Pinal for three months.  One sister is in charge of coordinating the hall cleaning schedule and another does attendance.  Sometimes they also help with counting donations, etc.
Not only is it super fun to do something different and have a special responsibility but you actually learn a lot about the work that goes into running a congregation.  It really does take a lot of effort and coordination from the part of the brothers.  I can now see more clearly the quantity of work and pressures that many of them have to deal with and this helps me appreciate them that much more.  So thank you brothers!

Así que una de las ventajas de servir en un grupo pequeño con pocos hermanos es que tienes la oportunidad de probar privilegios que normalmente nunca tendrías en una congregación grande.
Por ejemplo, yo estuve a cargo del sonido en Pinal por tres meses.  Una hermana está a cargo de coordinar la limpieza del salón y otra cuenta la asistencia.  A veces también algunas ayudan a contar las donaciones, etc.
No solo es súper divertido hacer algo diferente y tener una responsabilidad especial pero en realidad aprendes mucho acerca del trabajo que implica hacer funcionar una congregación.  En realidad requiere  mucho esfuerzo y coordinación de parte de los hermanos.  Ahora puedo ver más claramente la cantidad de trabajo y presiones a la que muchos de ellos se tienen que enfrentar y eso me ayuda a apreciarlos ese tanto más.  Así que muchas gracias hermanos!
