At first I asked
myself why so few outside speakers would come give the public talk. I didn’t understand it until I (together with
an army of sisters) accompanied the speaker to another congregation.
The sacrifice and
effort these brothers have to make just to dedicate a half-hour to the teaching
of a congregation is unbelievable.
We decided to
accompany Octavio and Charlene to a public talk in the Canton congregation at
12pm and at the Los Pinos group at 3pm.
We had to get up before the sun, Octavio borrowed an enormous and
ancient truck and we all climbed in the back and started on our way.
Al principio me
preguntaba por qué venian tan pocos discursantes de afuera. No lo entendí hasta que yo misma (junto con un ejercito de
hermanas) fui a otra congregación para acompañar al discursante.
Es increíble el sacrificio y el
esfuerzo que tienen que hacer muchos hermanos para poder dedicar simplemente
una media hora a la enseñanza de una congregaciıón.
Nosotras decidimos
acompañar
a Octavio y Charlene a su discurso en la congregación del Canton a las 12 pm y
al grupo de los Pinos a las 3pm. Nos
tuvimos que levantar antes de que saliera el sol, Octavio consiguió prestada una enorme y antiguísima camioneta y nos
subimos todas atras y empezamos nuestro camino.
First we drove almost
3 hours through dirt roads, passing one of the highest points of the
Sierra. About 10,000ft high.
Primero manejamos casi
3 horas por terracería, pasando uno de los puntos mas altos de esta
parte de la Sierra. A más de 3000 m de altura.

When we got to the
town of Los Pinos, we stopped at this sister’s house. The majority of the houses here don’t have
electricity or running water. So
sometimes people go to bed as early as 7pm!
We didn’t even have
time for coffee because there wasn’t much time left before the meeting!
Cuando llegamos al
pueblo de los pinos, pasamos a la casa de esta Hermana. La mayoría de las casas aquí no tienen ni electricidad
ni agua corriente. Así que a veces la gente se
acuesta tan temprano como las 7pm!
No tuvimos tiempo ni
para tomarnos un café porque faltaba poco para la reunion!
We walked for over an
hour on a rocky path until we got to the town of El Canton. When we arrived there were only a few minutes
left before the start of the meeting so we ran to change and sat down just in
time! How many people were able to
benefit from all this effort? About 7.
It’s a small congregation.
Caminamos por más de una hora por un
camino pedregoso hasta llegar al pueblo del Canton. Cuando llegamos faltaban solo unos minutos
para la reunión
así que
corrimos a cambiarnos y nos llegamos a sentar justo a tiempo! ¿Cuántas personas se pudieron beneficiar de
todo este esfuerzo? Como 7. Es una
congregación pequeña.
After the talk we
changed back and started the over 2hr long climb to Los Pinos. We were guided by brother Jaret, ministerial
servant of Los Pinos. This brother is 26
years old and has been a regular pioneer for the last 10. He has served all those years in the
Sierra. He tells us that in his very
first assignment his territory was a Sierra that included three states. They walked 400 miles per week and they slept
wherever they could. It would take them
a year to cover the territory. His
physical effort has been so great that at his young age he has already had a
heart attack and both his knees have needed injections because of the wear and
tear. But Jehovah has blessed him with a
beautiful, loving, and hard-working wife who supports him completely despite
having to put up with inconveniences and walking long distances (their closest
territory is 2 hours away on foot) and living near a puma (that one day got
into her kitchen!) and other wild beasts.
But they radiate happiness as they serve Jehovah together in complete
unity.
We were getting there
at 3pm, the exact hour of the meeting when Jaret started yelling from a
distance to the brothers (who we couldn’t even see yet) “The speaker is coming!
Wait! Don’t start the meeting Wait! They’re coming! They’re coming!”. So the meeting was pushed back to 3:30pm to
give us time to arrive and change. The
tiny mud brick hall was completely full and many of the more than 50 attending
had to stay standing. What kind of sound
system do they have? The brother uses a
tiny hand-held speaker and inserts a flash drive into it with the songs. Since he didn’t have that particular song we
all sung it acapela but it sounded beautiful!
Terminando el discurso
nos volvimos a cambiar y empezamos la subida de mas de 2 horas hacia los
Pinos. Nos dirigió el hermano Jaret,
siervo ministerial de los Pinos. Este
hermano tiene 26 anos y 10 como precursor regular. Y ha servido todo ese tiempo en la
Sierra. Cuenta que en su primera
asignación su territorio era una sierra que abarcaba tres estados. Caminaban
650 km por semana y dormían donde podían. Completar el circuito de su territorio les
tomaba un año. Tanto ha sido su esfuerzo
que a su corta edad ya ha sufrido un infarto y ha necesitado inyecciones en
ambas rodillas a causa del desgaste.
Pero Jehova lo ha bendecido con una hermosa, cariñosa, y trabajadora
esposa que lo apoya completamente a pesar de que esto significa pasar
incomodidades y caminar largas
distancias ( su territorio más cercano está a dos
horas caminando) y estar viviendo
cerca de un puma (que un dia se metió a su cocina!) y otras bestias salvajes. Pero irradian felicidad al estar sirviendo
juntos a Jehová en completa unidad.
Ibamos llegando a las
3pm, la hora exacta de la reunión así que Jaret se puso
a gritar desde lejos a los hermanos (que todavía no se alcanzaban a ver) “¡Ya
viene el discursante! ¡Esperen! ¡No empiecen la reunión! ¡Esperen! ¡Ya vienen! ¡Ya
vienen!”. Así qué la reunión se atrasó a
las 3:30pm para darnos tiempo para llegar y cambiarnos. El pequeño salón de adobe se llenó por
completo y muchos de los más de 50 asistentes tuvieron que permanecer de
pie. Cuál es su sistema de sonido? El
hermano usa una pequeña bocina de mano y una memoria usb para tocar los
cánticos. Cómo no tenía ese cantico en
particular lo cantamos a capela pero ¡sonó hermoso!
After the meeting we
had chicharrones (crunchy fried flour sheets) with vegetables and a brother
entertained us with his violin. At
nightfall, we returned all covered in blankets in the back of the truck,
singing and watching the stars all the way home.
Después de la reunión
cenamos chicharrones con verdura y un hermano nos entretuvo con su violín. Al anochecer, nos regresamos todas cobijadas
atrás de la camioneta, cantando y observando las estrellas hasta llegar a casa.
