Los Niños

I lent my iPad to my service partner so she could read a story from My Book of Bible Stories to her study.  All of a sudden we were surrounded by kids who all wanted to see and hear.  Kids LOVE the videos too.  But they are often willing to listen even when using low-tech visual aids like the "Listen to God" brochure in the pictures below.  

Le presté mi iPad a mi compañera de servicio para que le leyera una historia de Mi Libro de Historias Bíblicas a su estudiante.  De repente estuvimos rodeados de niños que querían ver y escuchar.  A los niños les ENCANTA los videos también.  Pero a menudo están dispuestos a escuchar aún cuando se usa medios visuales sencillos como el folleto "Escuche a Dios" como se ve en las fotos abajo.

The best way I can describe this city is that it's basically a mexican version of Dallas, with a little bit of San Antonio thrown in at the Santa Lucia park.  It's the most americanized city in Mexico, with shopping centers and buffet restaurants and modern parks where people do everything from practicing Capoeira to skateboarding to break dancing.  I was only there for about two days in March of this year because a sister who came to serve in Pinal in the preaching campaign last year invited us to her wedding.  Thanks Kiti!

La mejor manera que puedo describir a esta ciudad es que es basicamente una versión mexicana de Dallas, con un poco de parecido a San Antonio en el parque de Santa Lucía.  Es la ciudad más americanizada de México, con centros comerciales y restaurantes de bufet y parques modernos donde la gente hace de todo desde practicar Capoeira hasta patinar y hacer breakdancing.  Solo estuve ahí como dos días en Marzo de este año porque una hermana que vino a servir en Pinal durante la campaña de predicación el año pasado nos invitó a su boda.  ¡Gracias Kiti!

The Foundry park (Parque Fundidora) was created after this steel foundry closed because of bankruptcy.  Several years earlier it had had a terrible accident that involved a bucket tipping over and pouring more than 300 tons of molten steel, killing many of its workers.

El Parque Fundidora fue creado después que esta fundidora de acero cerró por caer en bancarrota.  Varios años antes hubo un terrible accidente que involucró el derrame de más de 300 toneladas de acero derretido, matando a muchos de sus trabajadores.

This is something very interesting that I learned about the history of Witnesses in Mexico.  The Witnesses used to operate not as a religious organization, but rather as a civil association.  They were classified as a cultural organization that promoted literacy.  

Therefore, the brothers did not sing at meetings and they did not use the Bible at people's doors.  They also had to carry this card which identified them as representatives of  "La Torre del Vigia (the Watchtower) a Civil Association founded for the non-profit promotion of cientific, educational, and cultural knowledge."

The sister who this belongs to still carries it in her service bag to this day.

Esto es algo interesante que aprendí sobre la historia de los Testigos en México.  Los Testigos antes no operaban como una asociación religiosa sino como una asociación civil.  Fueron clasificados como una organización cultural que fomentaba la alfabetización.  

Por lo tanto, los hermanos no cantaban en las reuniones y no usaban la Biblia en las puertas de la gente.  También tenían que cargar esta credencial que los identificaba como representantes de "La Torre del Vigia: Asociación Civil fundada para la divulgación científica, educadora y cultural no lucrativa."

La hermana a la que le pertenece esta todavía la carga en su bolsa de servicio hasta el día de hoy. 

Oaxaca

I was only able to spend one day in Oaxaca city this past January.  But what a day!

Solo pude pasar un día en la ciudad de Oaxaca este Enero pasado.  Pero ¡qué día!

The Santo Domingo Museum.  I especially love the mexican version of the last supper.  Complete with tunas, tomatoes, and chiles.

Oaxaca has the most incredible market.  There is such a variety of food and crafts.  Chocolate, mole, black clay, embroidered clothing and accessories, leather goods, carvings, paintings, breads, cheeses, creams of liqueurs, jewelry and so much more!  If anyone wants to start an import business with me let me know because I would love to be a buyer there.

Oaxaca tiene el mercado más increíble.  Hay tanta variedad de comida y artesanías.  ¡Chocolate, mole, barro negro, ropa y accesorios bordados, artículos de cuero, de madera, pinturas, panes, quesos, cremas de mezcal, joyería y tanto más!  Si alguien quiere empezar un negocio de importaciones conmigo déjenme saber porque me encantaría ser una compradora ahí.

Oaxaca is a sophisticated city of modern and forward-thinking people that is nonetheless firmly rooted in its traditions and customs. It loves colors and everything that is brilliant and lively.  American and european hippies love this place.  Just another exciting option for those who are thinking about moving
where the need is greater.

Oaxaca es una ciudad sofisticada de gente moderna y pensadora que sin embargo tiene muy asidas sus tradiciones y costumbres.  Ama los colores y todo lo brillante y vivo.  Los hippies americanos y europeos aman este lugar.  Solo una emocionante opción más para los que piensan en mudarse donde hay necesidad.

Huatulco, Oaxaca

After getting on a bus one night in Chiapas last winter we set off to the bays of Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca.  We didn't know how to get there exactly so we got off at the wrong place at 2 am, realized our mistake, ran with all our packages, backpacks and bags to get back on the bus and arrived at the next station where we had to wait until a bus to Huatulco arrived.  After sitting there a few hours, Sandra made a deal with a bus driver who said he'd take us there and we set off again around 5am.  When we finally arrived in Huatulco at 8am we had no idea what to do, we didn't know anyone or how to get around, all the info. we had was the address to the local Kingdom Hall, thanks to JW.org (thanks to which we were ever to attend all our meetings and go in service the next day).

However, by 10 am we had gotten a hotel on the town's plaza and were on the water.

Después de subirnos a un autobús en Chiapas el invierno pasado nos dirigimos a las bahías de Huatulco en el estado de Oaxaca.  No sabíamos exactamente como llegar así que nos bajamos en el lugar equivocado a las 2 am, nos dimos cuenta del error, corrimos con nuestras cajas, mochilas, y bolsas para subirnos de vuelta al autobús y llegamos a la siguiente estación para esperar a un autobús que nos llevara a Huatulco.  Después de estar ahí unas horas Sandra hizo un arreglo con un conductor de autobús que dijo que nos llevaría y nos pusimos en marcha otra vez como a las 5 am.  Cuando finalmente llegamos a Huatulco a las 8 am no teníamos idea de qué hacer, no conocíamos a nadie ni como orientarnos, la única información que teníamos era la dirección del Salón del Reino local, gracias a JW.org (gracias a lo cual pudimos asistir a todas las reuniones y salir al servicio el día siguiente).

Sin embargo, para las 10 am ya habíamos conseguido un hotel en la plaza y ya estábamos sobre el agua.

Huatulco is known for its bays.  The water is clear and blue, there are practically no waves, hurricanes never hit there and many of the beaches are still undeveloped.

Huatulco es conocido por sus bahías.  El agua es cristalina y azul, prácticamente no hay olas, los huracanes nunca pegan ahí y muchas de las playas siguen en su estado natural.

You can also snorkel in the reefs and see a variety of colorful fish.

También puedes esnorquear en los arrecifes y ver una variedad de peces coloridos.

Tlayudas.  Giant tortilla greased on the inside with pork fat, and filled with beans, cheese, and lettuce, caged and grilled over an open flame.

Ventanilla.  A beach that's very close to mangroves where many crocodiles live.  Our knowledgeable tour guide quietly paddled us right into their natural habitat.  He told us that those crocodile hunter shows are all staged.  It takes many men to wrestle and capture a crocodile.  To do it on TV they catch them beforehand and put them in a cooler on ice to weaken them so that they can't put up too much of a fight.  That's a turtle sitting on an crocodile in the last picture.  

Ventanilla.  Una playa que está muy cerca de unos manglares donde viven muchos cocodrilos.  Nuestro guía bien informado remó calladamente hasta adentrarnos en su hábitat natural.  Nos dijo que esos programas de cazadores de cocodrilos están todos falsificados.  Toma muchos hombres para luchar con y capturar un cocodrilo.  Para hacerlo en la tele los capturan de antemano y los ponen en una hielera sobre hielo para debilitarlos para que no puedan resistirse tanto.  En la última foto se ve a una tortuga sentada sobre un cocodrilo.
