Homecoming

I am going to visit!  I will be in Dallas on Thursday the 27th and in North Carolina by July 2nd.  Can´t wait to see you all!

Guanajuato

Every city has a rhythm, a pulse, a spirit.   One which exerts an influence on the life of its citizens.  Whether this comes from the environment or its people, I don’t know but it can be breathed and felt as if it vibrated in the air.

Cada cuidad tiene un ritmo, pulso, espíritu.  El cual influye en el estilo de vida de sus ciudadanos.  Si viene del ambiente o de su gente, no lo sé, pero se puede respirar y sentir como si vibrara.

In April I took my first vacation while in Mexico.  I went to stay with some sisters who supported the special campaign in Pinal and who were now returning home to Guanajuato State.

Guanajuato is a city with a spirit of charm.  It’s a modern city that lives in antiquity.  It’s joyous, fun, full of life and excitement.  It’s youthful and yet, a lover of the past.  It’s colonial look isn’t just a façade.  It’s buildings are full of history, ancient stones, and secrets.  All the streets and roads are paved with cobble-stones.  It’s alleys are a maze.  It’s a city inhabited by legends and memories-of Spanish ladies and gallant gentlemen, of a bloody revolution, and of the birth of the art of a new century.

En Abril me tomé mis primeras vacaciones en México.  Me fui a quedar con unas hermanas que vinieron a apoyar la campaña especial en Pinal y ahora regresaban a su casa en el estado de Guanajuato.

Guanajuato es una ciudad con un espíritu encantador.  Es una ciudad moderna que vive en la antigüedad.  Es un lugar alegre, divertido, lleno de vida y emoción.  Tiene un espíritu jóven pero amante del pasado.  Su aspecto colonial no es solo una fachada. Sus edificios están llenos de historia, de piedras antiguas, y de secretos.  Todas las calles y carreteras son empedradas.  Sus callejones son un laberinto.  Es una ciudad habitada por leyendas y recuerdos-de damas españolas y galantes caballeros, de una sangrienta revolución, y del nacimiento del arte de un nuevo siglo.  

The mummy museum is an example of the fascination that the people of Guanajuato feel for the stories and mysteries of the past.  When you walk through it’s streets you feel like you’ve gone back in time and arrived at a  sweeter,  more peaceful time when adventure and romance were common and everything was more  beautiful.

And at night…everything is even better.  The city comes to life at sunset.  Out come the students and other young people, the couples, the friends, the women with their small children to stroll and eat (and there sure is a lot to eat).  There’s live music everywhere and the restaurant’s terraces are full.  From the pípila you can see the entire city lit up beneath you.

It’s an incredibly romantic place.

So if you have the opportunity I recommend you visit Guanajuato.  It’s a small city so you can walk all over it in just one day (do it on foot and eat everything you find on the way-especially the Dorilocos!) and see almost all the famous landmarks.  Sit on the university steps, visit the Hidalgo Market, get to know the city cementery (where if you don’t buy perpetuity for your crypt you get exhumed in five years and incinerated or displayed in the museum if you look good enough), lose yourself in the alleys until you find the Alley of the Kiss and get to the Pipila, explore the Juarez theatre, drink a Danish coffee, go to the movies at midnight, and stay out on the street until late because it’s very safe, the weather is lovely, and the city doesn’t sleep.

El museo de las momias es un ejemplo de la fascinación que sienten los guanajuatenses por las historias y misterios del pasado.  Cuando uno se pasea por sus calles siente que ha retrocedido el tiempo y que uno ha llegado a una era más limpia, más tranquila, cuando la aventura y el romance eran cosas cotidianas y todo era más bello.

Y de noche…todo está todavía mejor.  La ciudad cobra vida al ponerse el sol.  Salen los estudiantes y demás jóvenes, las parejas, las amigas, las familias, las mujeres con sus niños pequeños a pasear y comer (y vaya que hay mucho qué comer).  Hay música en vivo por todas partes y se llenan las terrazas de los restaurantes.  Desde el pípila se ve toda la ciudad alumbrada debajo de ti.

Es un lugar increíblemente romantico.

Así que si tienes la oportunidad te recomiendo que visites Guanajuato.  Es una ciudad pequeña así que en un solo día puedes atravesarla (hazlo a pie y come todo lo que te encuentres en el camino-especialmente los Dorilocos! ) y ver casi todos los monumentos famosos.  Sientate en las escaleras de la Universidad, visita el Mercado Hidalgo, conoce el cementerio de la ciudad (donde si no pagas perpetuidad te exhumen después de 5 años y te incineran o exhiben en el museo si te ves lo suficientemente bien), piérdete en los callejones hasta que encuentres el callejón del beso y subas al Pípila, explora el teátro Juarez, tómate un café Danés, ve al cine a medianoche y sigue en la calle hasta las altas horas de la noche porque al cabo, es muy seguro y el clima es lindo y la ciudad no duerme.

In Leon you’ll find shoes.  Ok, and bags too-leather ones.  The industry of this second city didn’t impress me very much but its arquitecture did.  Here are some photos of Leon.

En León hallarás zapatos.  Ok, y también bolsas,-de piel.  La industria de esta segunda ciudad no me impresionó mucho pero su arquitectura sí.  E aquí algunas fotos de León.
